Is taking a self defense course worth it

So high crime, robbery, and rape scare you???  Right????  Well then this is for you; but is it worth it? Does it work? First if it's am attack from behind then no, if on the other hand you're learning to be aware of your surroundings then you'll never have to worry for the most part.  For the most part!!!! What kind of shit is this!!! Calm down....  There will always be situations being aware helps you to avoid those; that's unless you just love to fight... What's good about these courses? Well first they're great exercises and they'll get you in shape.  Second they help build confidence. Third you learn awareness.  Fourth you learn discernment; that is to say to judge what people do before they do it.  Example you can spot a mugger a mile away. Fifth you learn how to fight or stand up for yourself.  Yeah that's all good but what's bad?  Well here's what's bad.  First classes who only care about their tournaments and teach little to no self defense. Second classes whose self defense is too complicated.  Here's the thing you don't need to be a seventh don to protect yourself.  And too many moves for one defense will get you hit from behind.  Third classes that encourage street fighting.. You thought that's only on Karate Kid; wrong it happens a lot; instructors who want bad asses in their class.   These guys teach self offense not self defense.  Fourth classes that teach to yell out loud. Really?  That's gonna work you think?  Trust me it doesn't in fact it's useless; nobody's gonna help you.  So which classes are good and is the ymca any good? Well first do your research; go to a class and watch.  YMCA is very good for self defense only.  Not only that there's youtube there's just so much out there.
